Hitting

Everyone wants to be that player flying high into the air and hitting the ball down for the point.  Once you get a successful hit (aka 'kill'), you want to keep coming back for more.  Whether it is to crush the ball and make it bounce from the sand or make a shot that your opponents wish they could touch, but it's just out of their reach, there are many ways to earn that point.  But first you need to learn the steps and movements that will help you optimize what you can do once you are in the air.  Below are some great videos to help you do just that.

Footwork

Footwork is so important for hitting that both the McKibbin Brothers (special guest Olympian and pro beach volleyball player, Taylor Crabb) and Better At Beach pros have excellent videos on the subject.  Be sure to watch each video in order to gain the insights you need to have a proper approach and maximize your chances of making that 'kill' (i.e. point earned by hitting the ball).  Watch them in order, 'The Batter's Box' needs to be watched first.  The information provided in that video will set you up to having the best approach for beach volleyball, whether you hit on the left or right side or are left or right-handed.

Hitting mechanics

Hitting is such a complex movement.  It's one of the very few movements that you are actively hitting a ball away from your body while in midair, as a regular part of the sport.  Watch these videos, two from Better At Beach (the third is not freely available) and one from the McKibbin Brothers.  Once again, Taylor Crabb is the guest in the McKibbon Brothers video.  He has one of the best hitting mechanics in beach volleyball.  And he's also an inspiration for shorter players (he just makes to 6' tall) among the giant redwood-like players on the AVP and FIVB.

You definitely should record your own hitting and compare your mechanics to what they show in these videos.  I'll share other videos on how to improve various aspects of this complex skill - the skill of hitting.

Fixing 3 Mistakes

Three easy mistakes to fix to make you a better attacker. This video with Brandon Joyner from Better At Beach will help you be more dominant in your offense in beach.  Check it out.

Cut and High Line shots

Players, if you want to raise your game above a recreation level, then you need to watch these videos and start practicing cut and high line shots. If you think that you'll just be able to do this in the game at will without practice, then you are fooling yourself. Start practicing on the court, against a wall, with a partner, etc.  With these shots, you will spread the opposition from one corner to the other and cause chaos for them.  All brought to you from Better At Beach. Thanks to pro beach volleyball players and coaches Brandon Joyner and Logan Webber.

For indoor players

Are you an indoor volleyball player? Do you find yourself hitting the ball into the net or out of bounds often when you play beach volleyball? If you answered yes to both of those questions, then this video is especially for you.  And thanks to the McKibbin Brothers (and Taylor Crabb) for a great video summary of the difference between indoor and beach hitting.
